Description
An exceptional antique French copper bath dating from approximately 1870, featuring an elegant double-ended bateau silhouette, original red-brown painted exterior and beautifully aged patina.
Measuring an impressive 175cm in length, this substantial freestanding bathtub is an attractive example of 19th-century French sanitaryware.
The bath has been sympathetically restored, preserving the character of its original exterior while retaining its traditional metal-lined interior. Its graceful proportions and authentic surface make it an appealing centrepiece for a period bathroom or a contemporary interior.
Original character and patina
One of the most appealing features of this bath is its original painted exterior, which retains a beautifully aged red-brown finish.
Rather than stripping or polishing the copper to a bright finish, the restoration has preserved the historic surface and patina.
The interior retains its traditional plated metal lining, which has been carefully cleaned and prepared for use.
Sympathetic restoration
The bath has undergone sympathetic restoration, including:
- Gentle soda blasting of the original metal-lined interior to remove accumulated deposits and provide a clean, smooth surface (hasn’t been done yet but will be carried out before delivery)
- Careful cleaning and light polishing of the original painted exterior.
- Installation of a modern brass waste fitting compatible with UK plumbing.
- Water testing to check that the bath does not leak.
The restoration was undertaken with the intention of preserving as much original character as possible.
